Hold nothing. If you meet Buddha, kill Buddha. If you meet the patriarchs, kill the patriarchs. Free of all, bound by nothing, you live your life simply as it is. PERSONALITYhttps://saiyuki.fandom.com/wiki/Koumyou_Sanzo The above link gives a good basic summary of his personality, and here I'll dive down deeper into it. Koumyou likes to act like a fool, almost entirely to amuse himself, to a lesser degree because he doesn't care what people think, and to a far lesser degree because being underestimated is useful. For the most part, Koumyou has shut off his ability to care about much of anything. Having watched a few too many friends die gruesome deaths in front of his eyes, he convinced himself that that's just how the world is and there is literally nothing to be done about it but live in the moment. As much as possible, he embraced the singular teaching of Buddhism that he passed on to his pupils: "Hold nothing. If you meet Buddha, kill Buddha. If you meet the patriarchs, kill the patriarchs. Free of all, bound by nothing, you live your life simply as it is." Absolute detachment, complete impermanence. And he truly thought this was the only way to be, the only way to endure, until one rainy night his adoptive son was targeted in a horrific attack by another former pupil. Much to his own surprise, Koumyou could not stand by and simply observe his beloved son being torn limb from limb the way he'd had to watch so many others fall. And so, he shielded Kouryuu -- now Genjo Sanzo -- with his own body, and died in his stead. ![]() In the end, even Koumyou Sanzo couldn't simply "Hold Nothing". Kouryuu/Genjo Sanzo is the one exception to Koumyou's detachment, though given the chance he'll still act every bit the fool he ever did before. It's fun. You can't stop him, he outranks you all. ABILITIEShttps://saiyuki.fandom.com/wiki/Koumyou_Sanzo Copied from the link above: On top of the above, martial arts, magical wards, and meditation skills are all part of the standard Sanzo training. Unarmed combat, combat via the manipulation of strings of beads, and with the use of various weapons from swords to shakujo are all things we've seen in the series. It should also be noted that his home temple had an impressive armory of holy weapons, including Genjo Sanzo's holy banishing gun that fanon tends to assume Koumyou blessed himself. He can also blow hella smoke rings when he smokes, and he's good at folding origami. EXTRAItem: The Seiten Sutra Long ago, Shakyamuni Tathagata spread forth a sutra across the heavens, from which was born existence and void, light and dark. The earth was created thence, where life and death came to be. Shakyamuni tore apart the sutra into five pieces and entrusted its fate into the hands of the people Below. Seiten Scripture: One of the Founding Scriptures of Heaven and Earth. It manages “holy” or “yang”, and falls under restoration. Unique to the Seiten Sutra, it has healing and restorative powers. It has the power to create light. All five of the sutras are indestructible, and have a form that drapes over the shoulders of their Sanzo, and a form where it's a scroll. Upon activation, a potentially limitless number of tendrils of the scroll move through the air, guided by the Sanzo it's attached to, and can be used offensively or defensively as the Sanzo sees fit.

Sanzo Uniform
It's tabi socks and sandals or his train-issued boots, skinny jeans, then black top and arm-warmers. The off-white robe goes over all of that, held closed with a thin black cloth belt. Then over the robe you got the ceremonial bamboo breastplate which hooks over the shoulders and joins across the back. The sutra goes over this. Also part of the uniform, just not worn as often, are the golden crown and cloth veil.

Other Clothing
» A fuzzy dark green muff for his hands, similar green to the color backing Koumyou's sutra. Picked out for him by Devero at the winter faire.
» A hat. The inside is lined with the same green fur as the muff; the outside is dark brown leather. And yeah, it has flaps. Picked out for him by Devero at the winter faire.
» Fancy winter cloak: made of heavy cream wool, with a voluminous hood and a second, shorter cape around the shoulders to shed snow and rain. Rich tawny fur trims the edges of the fabric, and the front closure is, if not actually gold, an excellent facsimile of it. Picked out for him by Devero (and an NPC, played by Dev's player) at the winter faire.
» Every day traveling cloak: This one is made out of plain, waxed canvas, an unremarkable linen color, and lacks any special embellishments. Its clasp is simple and the hood is unlined. It is, however, heavy and sturdy and just as well constructed as the fancier ones they're already wearing. For every day, weather and traveling, easy to clean, easy to patch. Picked out for him by an NPC (played by Dev's player) at the winter faire.
» A pair of e-skates in Koumyou's size, the version for teknulls. A gift from Devero!
These are basically rollerblades of the future: anywhere there's sufficient magnetic metal present, electromagnets in the soles of the boots generate enough repulsion to let the wearer hover a certain distance off the ground. The electromagnets can be toggled on and off, allowing the wearer to walk like normal or glide similar to rollerblading or ice skating. Teknull version has a handheld remote, comes with chargers. These will not be able to work off the train unless they are specifically in an environment with a lot of metal present in the floor/ground. No metal, no magnetics.» Cute light-up kitty-ear headphones.
» Random outfits from the shop:

Weaponry
» A katana.
Consumables
» Loose tobacco. OOCly bought at end of Nov.
» Three cartons of cigarette packs, filtered, unflavored. OOCly bought at end of Nov.
» (And the free lighters that can come with it all.)
Misc
» Capsule Corp Capsule - Bed. (Doesn't go in the ARMs band.)
» ARMs Band! Which contains the rest of his inventory unless stated otherwise.
» Bagpipes.
» A simple photo book, inside is twenty photos of various versions of his son.
» A good digital camera that takes high quality pictures but is easy enough for someone who has never used one to work as long as they read the manual! It comes with a charging cable and has inbuilt memory to hold a lot of photos. There is even a mode where it can take filtered photos (make you look like drawing book pictures, create old-timey black and white photos, make you look like comic book characters and other novelty things).
» A kiseru (long, traditional Japanese pipe).
